Lady Helena Gleichen (born February 1, 1873 in London ; died January 28, 1947 there ) was a British painter and noblewoman.

Life

Helena Gleichen was a daughter of the German-British professional soldier and painter Count Victor Gleichen aka Prince Viktor zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg (1833-1891) and Laura Williamina Seymour (1832-1912), a daughter of Admiral George Seymour. Since the connection was considered to be morganatic , the wife was ennobled to Countess Gleichen before the wedding in Germany and could thus be admitted to the court of Queen Victoria , who was an aunt of the father. The other children from the marriage were the sculptor Feodora Gleichen (1861–1922), the professional soldier Edward Gleichen (1863–1937) and the singer Victoria Gleichen (1868–1951). During the First World War, the siblings renounced their German nobility titles.

During World War I she worked as a nurse for the British Red Cross and was employed as the head of an X-ray station on the Italian front in Cormons . She received the Italian Medal of Valor as a war award and became an officer of the Order of the British Empire .

Same painted portraits and pictures of horses. She was a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London .
