Helene Weigel Medal

The Helene Weigel Medal was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated on October 21, 1980 by the Council of Ministers of the GDR through its chairman Willi Stoph . The award was made for extraordinary and exemplary achievements in socialist-realistic art of representation. In particular, achievements were recognized that were performed in theaters of the GDR in the current calendar year before the award. The medal, which incidentally was only awarded to individuals, was awarded by the Minister of Culture on the occasion of World Theater Day every year on March 27, along with the certificate and award.

Appearance and wearing style

The silver-plated medal with a diameter of 20 millimeters shows in the center of the obverse the head of Helene Weigel, who is looking to the left from the observer . The reverse of the medal showed the three-line inscription in the middle: HELENE / WEIGEL / MEDAL , which is surrounded by a writing ring that also forms the edge of the medal. It reads: GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC . The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest on a gray bow in the middle of which a silver-plated medallion bears the initials of Helene Weigels HW . The interim brace is of the same quality.
