Helene Gossing (* May 21, 1886 as Helene Viol in Breslau ; † November 3, 1944 Plötzensee prison , Berlin ) was a German housewife and a victim of Nazi war justice.

Live and act

In 1944 Gossing lived as a widow in Leipzig . On the evening of July 20, 1944, while on vacation at an inn near Marienbad , she heard the radio report that the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler had failed on the same day . In the presence of the landlord and a street attendant, she said it was regrettable that Hitler had got away with his life. Instead, the poor generals should have believed it. Many people would have been happy that the attack had been successful because the war would then have ended very soon. She also stated that National Socialism was basically nothing more than a refined form of communism , a kind of “noble communism”.

After the landlord and / or the street attendant denounced Gossing, she was arrested, imprisoned in Barnimstrasse women's prison and tried before the People's Court . On October 18, 1944, she was found guilty and sentenced to death. In the grounds of the judgment it was stated:

“So she identified herself with the traitors of July 20th and thereby contributed to weakening our strength for manly defense and so that we can confidently and carefree fight for victory in this war (§5 KSSVO). [...] Whoever makes such common cause with the traitors in full possession of his spiritual powers must also share their fate so that we as a people remain clean, because we can only exist as a clean people. That is why Ms. G., who has forever proven her dishonor by her act, deserves the death penalty. If we judged differently, we would betray our soldiers at the front and our people's lives and will to win. "

The death sentence was carried out in the Plötzensee prison.
