Helene Cecilia Hammelrath (* 5. January 1950 in Bensberg ) is a German politician of the SPD . She was a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament from 2005 to 2010 and 2012 to 2017 .

Life

Helene Hammelrath is the youngest of the twelve children of Maria and Josef Hebborn, the owners of a grocery store in Bensberg. After graduating from college in 1969, she completed an apprenticeship as a bank clerk and then worked both as a senior civil servant at the Deutsche Bundesbank and as a department head at the Rhineland Cooperative Association .

Helene Hammelrath had been a member of the Bergisch Gladbach City Council since 1979 and has been Deputy Mayor there since 1999 ; she resigned both functions in May 2013. She was also deputy chairwoman of the SPD in the sub-district Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis and since 2002 a member of the party council of the Federal SPD.

In the state elections in 2005, Helene Hammelrath was elected to the state parliament via the reserve list of the North Rhine-Westphalian SPD . In the state elections in 2012, she won the state electoral district Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis I as a direct candidate . In 2016 she decided not to run again for the next state election .

Guarantee bank for social economy

In 1992, Helene Hammelrath was the first female bank founder in North Rhine-Westphalia to set up the guarantee bank for the social economy. The owners of this guarantee bank were predominantly the central associations of the independent welfare organization. Due to the lack of size and the lack of earnings prospects, the Guarantee Bank for Social Economy was merged with the GLS Bank and wound up in 2011 .
