Leni Schmidt , actually Helene Hermine Fischer-Schmidt , b. Schmidt, (born December 28, 1906 in Bremen , † November 11, 1985 in Bremen) was a German sprinter .

biography

Leni Schmidt joined the Bremen Gymnastics Association at an early age, where she initially played ball and handball until she increasingly discovered athletics for herself. She became known as a sprinter when she won the 100-meter run in 12.4 s at the Bremen championships in 1924. That would have been a German record, but could not be formally recognized, as your club belonged to the gymnastics association and not the athletics association. Then she became DZ master in Hanover. Schmidt then started for the Sportfreunde Bremen . Germany was not allowed to participate in the Olympic Games in 1924 and this discipline did not yet exist for women. It was not until 1928 that the athletics disciplines of 100 meters, 800 meters, 4-by-100-meter relay, high jump and discus throw were permitted at the Olympic Games for women.

Schmidt then took part in the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam. She won the team bronze medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay in 49.0 s together with her teammates Rosa Kellner , Anni Holdmann and Leni Junker , behind the team from Canada (gold) and the team from the USA (silver ). In the 100-meter run she won both her preliminary and the intermediate run, but was eliminated in the finals because she caused two false starts.

In 1929 she was third in the 200-meter run at the German Athletics Championships . Her sports career ended in 1930 due to a sports accident.
