Helga Nõu (until 1957 Helga Razier ; born September 22, 1934 in Tartu ) is an Estonian writer .

life and work

Helga Nõu fled to Sweden from the advancing Red Army in 1944 during World War II . She studied education there and then worked as a teacher in Stockholm and Uppsala . In 1957 she married the Estonian writer in exile Enn Nõu (* 1933).

Helga Nõu was active in the Estonian exile community in Sweden from her youth. From the 1950s onwards she wrote numerous works (prose and poetry) that dealt particularly ruthlessly with identity problems and ruptures in the lives of refugees. In addition, she dealt literarily with the generation conflict. Her works could only be published in her home country after the collapse of the Soviet occupation of Estonia in the late 1980s.

Helga Nõu also appears as a painter. She is also a translator from Swedish into Estonian (including Astrid Lindgren ).
