Helga Zerrenz

Helga Zerrenz (* 1940 in Berlin ) is a German pop singer . She had her greatest successes in the GDR in the 1960s .

biography

Helga Zerrenz was born out of wedlock. Her father was a soldier. Her mother refused her and had her declared insane , so that she was admitted to an institution for the mentally handicapped in Brandenburg . There she was tortured and harassed. When she was twelve she was examined and found to be normal. She was then taken to a children's home, where the director of the home sexually assaulted her.

At the age of 18, Helga Zerrenz aspired to a career as a singer and applied to the talent promoter Heinz Quermann . With her smoky voice, she quickly became a well-known and sought-after pop singer. Her breakthrough came with the song picking cherries in strange gardens . In 1967 she sang her most successful hit, Die Lichter im Hafen (music: Wolfgang Kähne, text: Dieter Schneider ). In 1968 she interpreted the song Waltz of the Summer by the West German singer Alexandra . Recording was banned in the GDR.

The singer now lives in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg .
