Heliodoro de Paiva

Heliodoro de Paiva (born around 1502 in Lisbon ; died December 21, 1552 in Coimbra ) was a Portuguese composer, philosopher and theologian.

life and work

He entered the Monastery of the Holy Cross ( Santa Cruz ) of Coimbra , an Augustinian canon monastery of the Canon Regulars of the Holy Cross . He is known for his talent in a wide variety of disciplines: music (organ, viola da gamba, harp, singing), composition, languages ​​(Greek, Latin, Hebrew), philosophy and theology.

The traditional work of de Paiva comes from the music manuscripts of the Santa Cruz Monastery in Coimbra (today kept in the library of the University of Coimbra ). He composed works for organ, masses, motets, magnificats, but without signing his works, which sometimes makes it difficult to identify them.

Obra a Quatro do 5º Tom is considered one of his main works .

The musicologists Mário de Sampayo Ribeiro and Macário Santiago Kastner have made an outstanding contribution to the publication of his works.
