Helios Sarthou

Helios Sarthou (born May 6, 1926 in Montevideo , † June 2, 2012 ) was a Uruguayan university professor, lawyer and politician .

The doctorate lawyer and law professor Helios Sarthou began his political career in 1961, initially in the Unión Popular . He co-founded the Frente Amplio in 1971 and was part of it until he left the company in 2008 due to ideological differences. During the transition from civil-military dictatorship to democratic structures in the mid-1980s, he was involved with the Izquierda Democrática Independiente (IDI). As the representative of the Montevideo department in the 43rd legislative period (LP) from February 15, 1990 to February 14, 1995, Sarthou had a titular mandate as a member of the Movimiento de Participación Popular(MPP), of which he was also one of the founders, in the Cámara de Representantes . In 1993 he was the third vice president of the Chamber of Deputies. In the 44th legislative period he then sat from February 15, 1995 to February 14, 2000 as senator in the Cámara de Senadores . There, too, he was third vice-president of the chamber in 1999. During this electoral period he formed the Corriente de Izquierda in 1997 . In 2008, after leaving the Frente Amplio, he founded the Asamblea Popular together with 26 de marzo . Sarthou, who also wrote in the column "Esta Boca es Mía" for the Internet news portal Montevideo Portal in 2008 , died at the age of 86 from the effects of a stroke suffered in his law firm and was buried at the Cementerio del Buceo .
