Hella O'Cuire Quirke

Hella M. O'Cuire Quirke , b. Bastian, (born March 26, 1866 in Kreuznach , † after 1917) was a German writer . She also published under the pseudonym Ellen Svala .

Life

O'Cuire Quirke came from an old French aristocratic family who had to leave France because of their beliefs. O'Cuire Quirke was born in Kreuznach, where she grew up before the family moved to Wiesbaden . She learned several languages ​​and after her father's death took a job as a travel companion. Her profession took her to Denmark , France and Scandinavia, among others . The letters and travelogues she wrote during her travels were published in the Kölnische Zeitung .

She finally settled in Paris , where she worked as a private secretary for the inventor of the stenotelegraph . During the Dreyfus Trial in 1894, she worked as a stenographer and translator for German, Austrian and English newspapers. After 1898 she married the pianist and singing teacher Conal O'Cuire Quirke and lived with him in London in 1913 .
