The light pond edge hover fly ( Parhelophilus frutetorum ) is a fly from the family of hover flies (Syrphidae).

features

The flies have a body length of 8 to 10 millimeters. Their foreheads have long yellow and black hair, which distinguishes them from the very similar dark pond edge hover fly ( Parhelophilus versicolor ), which has a yellow hairy forehead. The hairless compound eyes are narrowly separated from each other. The face front slopes down relatively flat, in the similar species it is slightly curved outwards. The mesonotum is matt black and has four yellow vertical stripes. The red and yellow scutellum has black hairs. The black abdomen has yellow side spots. The wire R4 + 5 is indented on the wings . The legs are red-yellow, the thighs ( femora ) predominantly black. The thighs of the hind legs are strongly thickened and the males have a brush-shaped, black-haired hump on the underside. This hump is missing in the dark pond edge hover fly.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is common in Europe and east to Siberia and Central Asia. It occurs widespread in Central Europe, especially in swamp areas, on swampy meadows and in the vicinity of small stagnant bodies of water. The flight time ranges from May to August, the maximum abundance is in June. The adults can be observed when visiting flowers, preferably on meadow, marsh and water plants. You are near the water.
