The light wasp thick head fly ( Conops ceriaeformis ) is a species from the family of bladder head flies (Conopidae).

features

The flies reach a body length of 10 to 13 millimeters. Her face is yellow and has a brownish keel. The forehead is colored completely black. The antennae are very long and also black, but their first link is yellow on the underside. The proboscis has a brownish color and is basal blackish in color. It's about one and a half times longer than the head. The mesonotum is black, the shoulder bumps are yellow. Schiller straps can be seen on the sides of the thorax . The abdomen of the males is predominantly yellow in color and has a fine black band on each segment at the front edge. The abdomen of the females is predominantly black and has yellow bandages. Your theka is very small, colored black and close-fitting. The thighs ( femora ) of the middle and rear legs of the males are brown-black in color and thickened, in the female they are predominantly black.

Occurrence and way of life

The animals are common in Europe and North Africa. They are rare in Central Europe and only common locally. They live in open areas such as meadows and roadsides and prefer dry habitats such as dry grass . They fly from July to September with the maximum in August. You can find them on field thistles , Dost and other flowers.
