The light gray corner wing spanner ( Macaria notata ), also called birch corner wing spanner , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the spanner family (Geometridae).

features

The wingspan of the moth is about 28 to 32 millimeters. The forewings have a shiny white base color. There are usually three transverse lines across the wings. Below the third cross line is a black pattern of spots. The caterpillars are brownish in color.

distribution

The species is Holarctic . It is widespread in Europe. In North America, the range extends from Nova Scotia to British Columbia and the Northwest Territories and in the south to North Carolina , Colorado and Oregon .

Way of life

The species occurs in mixed and deciduous forests. It forms two generations in Central Europe, in North America mostly one generation per year. In Central Europe, the flight time of the light gray corner wing spider usually lasts from April to June and from July to August. The butterflies are nocturnal. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various deciduous trees, including birch ( Betula ), alder ( Alnus ), willow ( Salix caprea ), hazel ( Corylus avellana ) and sloe ( Prunus spinosa ). The pupa hibernates.
