Hellnar

The small town of Hellnar is located at the foot of Snæfellsjökull on the south side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

It belongs to Snæfellsbær municipality and consists of a few farms, a hotel, a coffee house which is open in summer and the exhibition rooms of Snæfellsjökull National Park .

particularities

It is an old fishing village, in earlier centuries one of the most important on the Snæfellsnes coast. More than 200 people lived here in the 18th century, and they went out to sea in larger row boats for 8 and 10 men and lived a very poor life.

Today there is hardly any fishing from here. However, this still happens from the neighboring village of Arnarstapi , which can be reached on a very rewarding hike along the coast.

One lives here from agriculture and tourism, some summer houses and a hotel.

The information center of Snæfellsjökull National Park is located in the village. It was initially planned to move it to Hellissandur , but the funds were insufficient in view of the economic crisis that began in October 2008.

The small church, which is very picturesque, was consecrated in 1945. There were churches in the village since the end of the 19th century.

There are some larger caves by the sea, e.g. B. the Baðstofa , which are washed by the sea. Sometimes you can even go in by boat at high tide.

Personalities

Ásgrímur illi

In the 18th century Ásgrímur Vigfússon (1758–1829) lived here , a man with two surnames: Hellnaprestur (German pastor of Hellnar ) and Ásgrímur illi (German “The evil Ásgrímur”).

Even as a young man in his first parish in Staðarsveit he had fallen out with his parish and did so again in Hellnar, so that he was even relieved of his office twice. With the help of influential friends, etc. a. in Copenhagen, however, he managed to undo this every time. Not only did he have a reputation for being of extremely difficult temperament, but also for repeatedly violating the laws of his office. For example, he blessed the marriage of a very dissolute couple, although it was known that the future husband was already married elsewhere.

Guðlaugur miner

The owner of the guest house and later hotel in Brekkubær, Guðlaugur Bergmann (1938-2004), was one of the pioneers in environmental protection in Iceland and partly responsible for Snæfellsnes being awarded the Green Globe 21 for environmentally friendly tourism.

He had started his career as a businessman and, in addition to the hotel, also ran the small publishing house Leiðarljós.

Dieter Roth

The German artist Dieter Roth owned a house in Hellnar and sometimes flew here in a small plane himself. He had taken care of the expansion of the local airfield.

His grave is in the town's small cemetery.
