The Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) is a non-university research institution that was founded in 2009 through the conclusion of a cooperation agreement between the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI) and Saarland University (UdS). The research focus of the HIPS located in Saarbrücken is the development of novel antibiotics .

history

The HIPS was founded in August 2009 following an evaluation of a joint application by the HZI and UdS. In 2015, the premises of Saarland University were moved to a new building of their own. At the time of its founding, the institute was created through the merger of the UdS chairs of Rolf Müller, Claus-Michael Lehr and Rolf W. Hartmann, which were incorporated into the HZI as scientific departments. The HIPS is the first publicly funded non-university research institute in Germany that is explicitly dedicated to pharmaceutical research. As the HZI site, it is part of the “Health” research area and the “Infection and Immunity” program of the Helmholtz Association . A total of nine departments and (junior) groups are currently based at HIPS.

research

The aim of the research activities at HIPS is the discovery and preclinical development of active ingredient frameworks for novel anti-infectives. Here, findings from basic research are to be transferred as efficiently as possible into medically usable applications ( translational medicine ). To make this possible, the research focus of the HIPS departments covers a large part of the preclinical drug development. In addition to synthetic molecules, microbial natural substances from soil bacteria (e.g. myxobacteria ) serve as the basis for the discovery of new active ingredients . The pharmaceutical properties of these raw materials are optimized with the help of chemical , biotechnological and bioinformatic methods. In addition, the HIPS develops strategies that allow active ingredients to overcome biological barriers in order to reach their target. The HIPS works closely with researchers from other research institutions and universities in Germany and abroad. In addition to its basic funding, the HIPS has been able to continuously increase the third-party funding contribution to its overall funding since it was founded, so that in 2019 there was roughly the same level of third-party funding and basic funding. The donors included the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the European Union (EU), the German Research Foundation (DFG), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation . HIPS working groups are involved in several ongoing research projects at the DZIF. The scientific director of the HIPS has been Rolf Müller since 2009, who has also been the coordinator of the DZIF research area "New Antibiotics" since 2017.
