The Helms Bluff is a striking and north facing cliff at the Scott Coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It rises 16 km east of Mount Morning above the Eady Piedmont Glacier .
The United States Geological Survey mapped it using its own surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1960 after Lieutenant Commander Louis L. Helms, officer on duty in the Navy's VX-6 flight squadron while it was wintering at McMurdo Station in 1961.
