The Helmsdale is a river in the Scottish Council Area Highland in the traditional Scottish county of Sutherland . It is the outflow from Loch Badanloch . From there it flows 34 km in a south-easterly direction and flows through the lake Loch Achnamoine . Finally the Helmsdale flows into the Moray Firth in Helmsdale . From Helmsdale on, the A897 on the left and the tracks of the Far North Line on the right follow the course of the Helmsdale upstream for 24 km. The railway line crosses it over a bridge in the north. Shortly before its confluence, the A9 crosses a bridge over the Helmsdale. There is also another road bridge over the river in Helmsdale.

The Helmsdale is known for its rich salmon population.
