Helmsdale ( Scottish Gaelic Bun Ilidh ) is a village in the Scottish Council Area Highland . It is located in the traditional county of Sutherland about 45 km south of Thurso and southwest of Wick on the north coast of the Moray Firth . In 1991 Helmsdale had 828 inhabitants, whereas in 1871 there were still 1511 people living there.

history

Helmsdale was developed as a fishing settlement for the settlement of the area after the Highland Clearances in the early 19th century . As in many regions of the Highlands , with the decline of the herring fishery, the tourist development of the town began. The river Helmsdale , which flows into the Moray Firth at Helmsdale, is still considered one of the best rivers in Scotland for fly fishing for Atlantic salmon .

At the site of today's Helmsdale there was once a hunting lodge from 1488. There, in July 1567, John Gordon the 11th  Earl of Sutherland and his wife were poisoned by his aunt Isobel. The earl passed away five days later. With this act, Isobel wanted to favor her own son, the heir to the title. Unfortunately, he too ate the poisoned food and died two days later. Isobel committed suicide on the day of her execution in Edinburgh .

traffic

The A9 , the most important highway in the Scottish Highlands, runs directly through Helmsdale. It used to cross the Helmsdale a few hundred meters inland on the old bridge - a building by Thomas Telford . The new bridge, however, is located near the coast. The village has its own train station, which is regularly served by the Far North Line on its route from Inverness to Thurso. From Helmsdale the tracks no longer run along the A9 and the coast, but bend to the north and follow the course of the Helmsdale.

Sports

The local football club Bunillidh Thistle FC plays (as of 2018/19) in the North Caledonian Football League , an independent league of Scottish football that is not linked to the league system.
