Helmut Boese (librarian, 1916)

Helmut Boese (born March 29, 1916 in Potsdam , † June 15, 2001 in Stuttgart ) was a German librarian .

Life

After graduating from the Victoriagymnasium in Potsdam, Helmut Boese studied music from 1935 at the University of Music in Sondershausen and at the Conservatory in Würzburg, and from 1936 philosophy, comparative religious studies and musicology in Würzburg, Marburg, Bonn and Berlin. In the spring of 1940 he received a doctorate from Arnold Schering in Berlin with a work on the history of music. phil. PhD. He had been doing military service since May 1940, and at the end of 1945 he returned to Berlin from being a prisoner of war in the Soviet Union. Initially active as a new teacher, Boese had been a trainee lawyer at the Public Scientific Library in East Berlin, later the German State Library , from April 1, 1947, and in 1948 passed the library specialist examination. From mid-1949 until his departure for health reasons on July 31, 1957, Boese headed the manuscript department. Since 1959 he cataloged the manuscripts of the Hamilton Collection for the State Library with a fee contract. In 1966 he did not return from a business trip from West Berlin and worked there at the Berlin State Library, Prussian Cultural Heritage . From mid-1971 until his retirement in 1979 he worked in the manuscript department of the Württemberg State Library in Stuttgart .

Boese has worked extensively on Latin manuscript studies and has written several library catalogs of historical manuscripts. He also published on the tradition of the Neoplatonic philosopher Proklos and especially his translation by Wilhelm von Moerbeke as well as on Latin psalm glosses . In 1997 he was awarded the Academy Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
