He studied at the Bayreuth Church Music School (today the University for Protestant Church Music Bayreuth ) and received his B diploma there in 1970 . Afterwards he was appointed choir assistant with the Windsbacher Boys Choir. As a piano and organ teacher, he shaped generations of students there. He also taught theoretical subjects such as ear training and harmony there. In 1979, he succeeded Emanuel Vogt as Dean's Cantor for the Windsbach Dean's District.

Helmut Duffe became known as the composer of numerous choral works, wind pieces and organ preludes. Among other things, he wrote the Windsbacher Psalms, which are part of the repertoire of the Windsbach Boys Choir. His best-known hymn, Let's go to the Lord's table, was included in the Evangelical Hymnbook (regional part Bavaria and Thuringia, number 578).

In 2006 he was retired by the choir director Karl-Friedrich Beringer . He died after a long illness at the age of 67 and was buried in the Windsbach cemetery.
