Helmut Engels

Helmut Engels (born May 2, 1931 in Jacobidrebber , Grafschaft Diepholz district) is a German politician ( SPD ).

After attending primary school in Drebber , Engels began an apprenticeship with the Deutsche Reichspost. He completed his training at the post office in Diepholz and at the post office school in Bremen . Until he moved into the Lower Saxony state parliament in 1978, he worked as a postal clerk. During this time he was an elected member of the staff council for several years. Engels has been a member of the German Postal Union since 1947.

In 1957 he joined the SPD. Engels was the local association chairman of the SPD local associations in Drebber and later Bamstorf for almost twenty years. In 1964 he became chairman of the SPD sub-district Bassum and, after the district reform, in Diepholz. He was chairman of the waste disposal association of all communities in the Grafschaft Diepholz district and a committee member of the Hunte water association.

Already 4 years after joining the SPD in 1961, Engels became councilor of the Jacobidrebber community, his place of birth. From 1967 until the community reform in 1974 he was elected mayor and honorary community director of the Jacobidrebber community. Between 1976 and 1981 he was elected mayor of the community of Drebber and mayor of the integrated community of Barnstorf . Since 1986 he was again mayor of the Drebber community. From 1968 he was also a member of the district council and district committee as well as chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. At times he was deputy district administrator of the Diepholz district .

Engels became a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament from June 21, 1970 to June 20, 1990 in the seventh to eleventh electoral term. He is the bearer of the Cross of Merit on Ribbon and 1st class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
