Helmut G. Walther (born July 4, 1944 in Bayreuth ) is a German historian .

Helmut G. Walther studied history, German, political science and philosophy at the Universities of Erlangen-Nürnberg , FU Berlin and Konstanz from 1963 to 1970 . In 1968 he passed the state examination for teaching at grammar schools. In 1970 he received his doctorate under Arno Borst and Waldemar Besson in Konstanz. From 1970 to 1978 he worked as a research assistant and assistant. His habilitation took place in Konstanz in 1978. From 1980 to 1993 Walther taught as a professor for Middle and Modern History at the University of Kiel . From 1993 until his retirement in 2009 he was professor for Medieval History at the University of Jena .

His main research interests include the social support groups of political ideas in the Middle Ages, the state formation process in the later Middle Ages, the heretic history of the Middle Ages, the relationship between the West and Islam and the history of reception in the Middle Ages.
