Helmut Gneuss

Helmut Gneuss (born October 29, 1927 in Berlin ) is a German Anglicist .

He is a professor emeritus at the University of Munich , where he held the chair for historical English linguistics from 1965 to 1997. Under his leadership (1965–1997) "Munich was able to become an internationally recognized research center for medieval and especially Old English studies. A number of publications have appeared at the institute. Prof. Gneuss' research focuses on the history of medieval English libraries and the liturgy of the Anglo-Saxon Church , the lexicography of Old English, the edition of medieval texts and the history of linguistics. The investigations into the linguistic standardization efforts that emanated from Bishop Æthelwold (963-84) and his circle have become standard works "

Gneuss is a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , a member of the Academia Europaea and a corresponding member of the British Academy , the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Medieval Academy of America . At the BAdW, among other things, he heads the commission for the publication of the Middle Latin dictionary .
