Helmut Howiller

Helmut Howiller (born June 27, 1943 in Dieterswald , Wartheland ) is a German judoka who competed for the GDR. He was European champion in 1971.

In 1958 Howiller started judo at BSG Motor Magdeburg-Südost. The actual sporting career of the trained blacksmith began a few years later at SC DHfK Leipzig , where he won four championship titles in the light heavyweight division from 1964 to 1967. In 1969/70 the Leipzig judoka switched to SC Leipzig . In 1970, 1971 and 1972 Howiller won three championship titles for his new club. In the 1972 final, he defeated Uwe Stock , who won the GDR light heavyweight championship in 1973.

At the European Judo Championships in 1963 Howiller retired in his weight class in the preliminary fight, but won bronze in the open class. 1964 followed another bronze medal at the European championships in the all category. In 1968 he won the silver medal in the light heavyweight division at the European Championships behind the West German Peter Herrmann . 1971 Howiller won the European Championships in Gothenburg. At the Judo World Championships in 1971 in Ludwigshafen, Howiller lost to both finalists, Fumio Sasahara and Nobuyuki Sato , but received the bronze medal after his victory in the round of hope. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Howiller lost his first fight against West German Paul Barth , after two wins in the hope round he was defeated in the fight for a place in the semifinals against Brazilian Chiaki Ishii .

After his career Howiller was a judo trainer, until 1990 he was with SC Leipzig. There he looked after Udo Quellmalz, among others .
