Chiaki Ishii

Chiaki Ishii (born October 1, 1941 in Ashikaga , Japan ) is a former Brazilian judoka . He was the 1972 light heavyweight Olympic bronze medalist and the first Brazilian medalist in judo.

The 1.80 m tall Chiaki Ishii won both the light heavyweight and the open class at the 1970 Pan American Championships. At the Judo World Championships in 1971 in Ludwigshafen, he also competed in both weight classes. In the light heavyweight division, Ishii won a bronze medal after he qualified for the semi-finals in the hope round by beating the German Paul Barth and lost there against the eventual world champion Fumio Sasahara from Japan. In the open class he was defeated by Vitaly Kuznetsov from the Soviet Union and in the round of hope Masatoshi Shinomaki from Japan.

In May 1972 Ishii repeated his double victory at the Pan American Championships. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Ishii was defeated by Paul Barth in the pool final, and by defeating Helmut Howiller from the GDR in the hope round he reached the semi-finals. After losing there against the British David Starbrook , he received the bronze medal. In the open class he was defeated by Vitaly Kuznetsov in his first fight. After a victory in the hope round over the Australian Barry John Johnson , Ishii was eliminated against the Dutchman Willem Ruska . At the Judo World Championships in 1973 in Lausanne, Ishii finished fifth again in the light heavyweight division.

With Tania and Vania Ishii, Chiaki Ishii has two daughters who competed for Brazil at the Olympic Games. The US judoka Mike Swain is married to Tania Ishii and is the son-in-law of Chiaki Ishii.
