Fumio Sasahara

Fumio Sasahara ( Japanese 笹 原 富 美 雄 , Sasahara Fumio ; born March 28, 1945 ) is a former Japanese judoka who was world light heavyweight champion in 1969 and 1971, in the weight class up to 93 kilograms.

Sasahara won the 1966 student world championships in Prague in the light heavyweight division, in the open class he finished second behind his compatriot Masatoshi Shinomaki . At the 1969 World Championships in Mexico City, on his way to the final, he defeated French Jean-Luc Rougé in the pool semi-finals, German Peter Herrmann in the pool finals and his compatriot Tomoyuki Kawabata in the fight for the finals. In the final, he met Peter Herrmann again and won the title.

Two years later at the 1971 World Championships in Ludwigshafen, he defeated the French Pierre Albertini , Helmut Howiller from the GDR and the Brazilian Chiaki Ishii on his way to the final . In the final he defeated his compatriot Nobuyuki Satō . Sasahara also represented his country at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. In his opening fight, he defeated the Australian Barry Johnson after 27 seconds . In his second fight he lost after 5:10 minutes to the later Olympic champion Schota Tschotschischwili from the Soviet Union.
