Helmut Kasten

Helmut Kasten (born April 21, 1895 in Hamburg ; † January 14, 1982 ibid) was a German high school teacher ( classical philologist ) and translator of Latin works.

In 1913, Kasten completed his Abitur at the Johanneum School of Academics in Hamburg (as Primus omnium and recipient of the Schrader premium). He studied at the University of Hamburg and received his doctorate in 1922. From 1925 until his retirement he was a teacher at the Johanneum. From 1927 to 1962 he was secretary of the Johanneum Alumni Association and became an honorary member in 1962.

He is known as a translator and editor of the works of Marcus Tullius Cicero . In the Tusculum Collection he edited the letters to Atticus (1959), to his friends (Ad familiares) and to Cicero's brother Quintus (1965). He also edited the letters of Pliny the Younger with translation and state speeches by Cicero (Scientific Book Society 1969 and various speeches by Teubner, the Philippine speeches in 1970).

He was a member of the German Singers Association and opera lover (especially Richard Wagner).
