Helmut Langer (born April 4, 1945 in Johanngeorgenstadt ) is a qualified designer and professor in the field of visual communication , author and lecturer .

education

Langer studied graphic design at the Cologne factory schools. After working for a year as art director in a Swiss advertising agency , Helmut Langer has been working as a freelance visual designer since 1970.

Association activities

From 1987 to 1993, Helmut Langer was the second German president and board member of Icograda , the world umbrella organization for graphic design and visual communication. He was the founding president of the “ICOGRADA Foundation”, the “Friends of ICOGRADA” and the International Biennales Coordinating Committee (IBCC). He is a juror at many international design competitions and was International Competition Chairman of Icograda from 1993 to 2003.

He is a member of the International Institute for Information Design in Vienna (IIID), honorary member of the Graphic Design Biennale Association Brno / CZ and the Bienal Internacional del Cartel en Mexico.

Teaching

From 1991 to 1993 Helmut Langer was appointed professor at the University of Art and Design in Halle . He has taught as visiting professor at Nagoya University of Arts (Japan), INACAP Universidad in Santiago de Chile and at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin. Since 2004 he has been teaching visual design at the ecosign / Academy for Design in Cologne and since 2007 at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad (NID), India.

Works

Helmut Langer specializes in institutional, cultural, social and environmental communication for international organizations and European institutions. Conception and visual design of many global and multicultural projects, including a. for the United Nations, for UNESCO (including world campaign “Tolerance - Respect Others”, world campaign “UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development”), for UNEP (including symbol “Sustainable Consumption”, symbol “Life Cycle Initiative”), and for UNFCCC (Responding to Climate Change - “Milestones” for global networking).

Awards

Helmut Langer has received many international prizes and awards, including a. Art Directors Club New York, Adelaide Art Directors Club (Australia), International Calendar Competition Tokyo, Type Directors Club New York, World Calendar Awards Competition USA, most recently gold medal International Contest of Trade Marks and Logotypes TAMGA 2004 in Russia, he is represented in international Design collections, exhibitions and publications, etc. a. First Choice - Leading International Designers, edited by Ken Cato, Australia 2003; World Identity, edited by Robert Peters, USA 2005.

In 2008 the Nagoya University of Arts, Japan, awarded Helmut Langer as the first non-Japanese designer the title of Professor honoris causa. Since then he has had the full title of Prof. hc Prof. (CHN) Dipl.-Des.
