Helmut Martin Rieger

Helmut Martin Rieger (born October 16, 1943 in Graz ) is a former German politician ( SPD ) and was a member of the European Parliament from 1980 to 1984 .

Life and work

He studied history , literature and political science at the universities of Graz , Vienna and Heidelberg . In 1968 Rieger received his doctorate as Dr. phil. and then studied for two years at the Diplomatic Academy Vienna . He later worked for Robert Bosch GmbH and in the field of political education at the Institute for European Politics and Cooperation (IPEZ) in Bad Salzuflen , which he headed from 1978. He published on the politics of the European Union.

Rieger was a member of the municipal council in Bad Salzuflen as well as the board of directors of the local SPD association and headed the Europa-Union Deutschland in the Lippe region.

On November 13, 1980, he replaced the late Heinz Schmitt in the European Parliament. There he was a member of the Socialist Group and the Committee on External Economic Relations. After the 1984 European elections , he left parliament.
