Helmut Pottmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helmut Pottmann (* 1959 ) is an Austrian mathematician and university professor at the Vienna University of Technology ( geometric modeling and industrial geometry).

From 1977 Pottmann studied mathematics at the Vienna University of Technology with a master’s degree in 1982, then was a university assistant and received his doctorate in 1983 at the Vienna University of Technology under Walter Wunderlich ( on the geometry of higher planetary orbital motions ). In 1986 he completed his habilitation at the Vienna University of Technology, where he was a private lecturer. In 1989 he was on a research stay at the Center for Applied Mathematics at the TH Darmstadt and in 1989/90 he was visiting professor at the University of Kaiserslautern and in 1990/91 at Purdue University . In 1991 he became assistant professor at the University of Hamburg and in 1992 professor of geometry at the TU Vienna. From 1999 he was also an adjunct professor at the University of California, Davis . From 1994 to 1997 he was director of the Institute for Geometry at the Vienna University of Technology and since 2000 he has been a member of the Advanced Computer Vision competence center in Vienna.

He was visiting professor at Tsinghua University in 2004 and is the scientific director of the Center for Geometric Modeling and Scientific Visualization at King Abdulah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia.

Pottmann deals with computer graphics (computer vision), CAD , robot kinematics and descriptive geometry (geometric modeling), for example in architecture and industry.

For 2017 he was selected for the Gauss lecture .
