Helmut Reihlen

Helmut Reihlen (born August 14, 1934 in Bergisch Gladbach ) is a former director of the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) and long-time President of the regional synod of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg .

Life

Reihlen grew up in Leipzig, where he attended elementary school and later the Leibniz high school. In 1950 his family fled to the West and settled in Cologne. From 1954 to 1959 he studied iron and steel engineering at RWTH Aachen University and at the Clausthal Mining Academy . In the meantime he spent two semesters as a Fulbright scholar at Wesleyan University in Middletown (Connecticut) . In 1957 he was AStA chairman at RWTH Aachen University, and from 1957/58 he was second chairman of the Association of German Student Associations (VDS). In 1964 he received his doctorate in Clausthal.

From 1960 to 1970 Reihlen worked as a manager for the Deutsche Maschinenbau-Aktiengesellschaft (DEMAG) in Rheinhausen. In 1971 Reihlen moved to Berlin and was a member of the management of the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) until 1976. From 1977 to 1999 he was director of DIN. Between 1984 and 1993 Reihlen took over the chairmanship of the board of directors of Stiftung Warentest .

In addition to his professional career, Reihlen was involved in many different ways in politics and the church. In 1966 he became a member of the SPD. Since the late 1960s, he has held a number of honorary church positions. Between 1979 and 1997 he was president of the regional synod of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg. During this time he moderated the reunification of the divided Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg. In addition, Reihlen was a member of the Synod of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) from 1985 to 2003 . Reihlen belongs to the Brandenburg Cathedral Chapter and acted as curator of the Brandenburg Cathedral Foundation from 1999 to 2007 . In addition, Reihlen was committed to examining the life and work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the culture of remembrance and science.

Helmut Reihlen is married to the dentist Erika Reihlen . The couple have three children together.
