Helmut Roth (soccer player)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helmut Roth (born January 5, 1950 ) is a former German soccer player who played a total of 12 Bundesliga games for TSV 1860 Munich and MSV Duisburg .

Career

Start of his career at 1860 Munich (until 1970)

Roth played for SV 03 Tübingen in his youth and proved to be a very talented defender , which earned him appointments to the national school team of the Federal Republic . He took part in the UEFA youth tournament in Turkey in 1967 and in France in 1968 with the DFB youth team. The Bundesliga club TSV 1860 Munich became aware of him during an international match against England . Shortly thereafter, Roth, who had no player agent at the time, signed a contract with the "Löwen" and was thus part of their Bundesliga squad from the 1968/69 season. In Munich, he shared a flat with his colleague Klaus Fischer , who later made it into the national team and became well known. According to Fischer, Roth possessed high technical qualities, which were particularly evident in duels, but from the start he had difficulties with the hard training of the professionals. On September 4, 1968, he was in a 2-1 win against Borussia Dortmund in the first team and made his Bundesliga debut. While he was occasionally called up later in the season, a broken shin threw him back in the 1969/70 season. Also because he did not receive any special support from the association afterwards, the healing process took a very long time and he did not succeed at all in returning to the team. In view of this, he left TSV 1860 Munich in the summer of 1970 and later made the statement himself that he should have tried better for a career at the second division level.

Further professional positions in Lugano and Duisburg (1970–1972)

After leaving Munich, he joined the Swiss first division club FC Lugano for the 1970/71 season . At Lugano he took a regular place, took third place in the table with the team and reached the final of the Swiss Cup in 1971. In this he was substituted on against Servette FC Genève in the 73rd minute, but could not avert a 2-0 defeat of his team.

In the run-up to the 1971/72 season, he accepted an offer from MSV Duisburg , which enabled him to return to the Bundesliga. In a team around actors like Michael Bella and Bernard Dietz , however, he was faced with considerable competition and was therefore unable to prevail. He did not get beyond two missions, where he played his twelfth and last Bundesliga game in June 1972. In the summer break that followed, he left both MSV and German professional football.

Further activity in football (after 1972)

In 1972, Roth decided again to move abroad and joined the Spanish second division club UE Sant Andreu . The club from Barcelona was only a stopover for him, as he returned to Germany some time later and continued his career in amateur football in Baden-Württemberg. Among other things, he ran for the FV Biberach . At that time, through the fault of another road user, he got into a serious car accident that caused serious burns. In the time after that he worked as a trainer in his home region around Tübingen.
