Life

In October 1948, the then 27-year-old actor and broadcaster took part in a theater performance by inmates of the Lehrter Strasse cell prison as an employee of the RIAS Berlin . There he was less impressed by the performance than by the desolate life of the prisoners. That is why he began collecting clothing for prisoners in 1948 in Berlin, which was in ruins. At the time, Berlin was a city through which streams of refugees passed, struggling with basic needs. Nobody had the nerve to stand up for prisoners at the time. At that time, Ziegner personally pulled a handcart on which he had mounted the “Clothing collection for released prisoners” sign across the Kurfürstendamm and promoted the good cause. He picked up prisoners at the gates of detention centers when they were released, looked after them, provided them with living space and jobs. A foundation emerged from this work, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2007. It is mainly financed by grants and donations.

Foundation, endowment

Since a stay in prison, his work has focused on the " rehabilitation of prisoners and those released from prison, as well as vulnerable and disadvantaged young people". Since he was already involved in this area in the 1950s, he is known as the father of rehabilitation . He is the namesake of the Universal-Stiftung Helmut Ziegner , a foundation working in this direction and, in 2007, the namesake of a vocational gGmbH.
