Born in Berlin, Helmut von Papen experienced the Second World War and the end of the war in Western Pomerania . After the eviction, he started school in his hometown. During his school days he learned to fly. After his university entrance qualification, he did voluntary service in the air force of the Bundeswehr and as a reserve officer, accompanying his studies, service in the TV (territorial defense ) of the Bundeswehr. During his studies of economics and social sciences in Frankfurt and Los Angeles , graduating with a "master's degree", he acquired American and German private pilot licenses, the private pilot license (PPL) and the license for controlled visual flight (CVFR). He became a member of the German Aerospace Society (DGLR) in Bonn. There he headed the Aerospace History Department . So it came about that Helmut von Papen made the area of Air and Space one of his journalistic and journalistic focuses.

After completing his studies, he became an employee of the then Farbwerke Hoechst AG in Frankfurt-Höchst . Under the management board for the field of chemistry and pharmacy, he was responsible for scientific communication with chemists, pharmacologists and doctors. 1970–1972 he headed the Hesse regional group of the BDW Bund Deutscher Werberater e. V. in Frankfurt the "Frankfurter Werbe-Seminare", for the post-qualification of business economists in the field of communication sciences. From 1969 to 1971 he organized the journalistic support of several election campaigns of the Frankfurt and Hessian CDU on a voluntary basis . In 1972 he accepted Rainer Barzel's offer to work as controller for the field of journalistic and media campaign activities for the 1972 federal election .

For three years in the mid-1970s he was one of three managing directors for the field of building science information, advertising and PR for wood in the field of construction and expansion at the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Holz e.V." in Düsseldorf, active. Here he dealt intensively with architecture, planning and development of building elements. In this position he was also editor-in-chief and publicist of various publications and specialist publications on this topic at ArGe Holz e. V. His main interest was the connections between different materials. In the 1975 summer semester, Papen gave lectures on communication science at RWTH Aachen University.

Research on Indian studies and anthropology

The activities in medical journalism and in the DGLR resulted in frequent stays in the USA . Here he was able to build on his first encounters with the urban and peasant culture of the Anasazi and their neighboring cultures in Four Corner ( Utah , Colorado , Arizona and New Mexico ), which he had already got to know during his stay with the Air Force in Texas and New Mexico . This cultural area became the subject of his 40 years of research in the field of Indian studies of North America. One of his best-known works is the proof that the term race should be obsolete as a differentiation between human regional groups and that a differentiation is only possible according to mtDNA lines (Haplogroups). Furthermore, his investigations showed that skin color cannot be a criterion in the division of races. On the basis of current research, he demonstrated that skin color only has to do with the angle of the sun in which a human population lives for over 1000 years.
