Helmuth Schneider (born July 29, 1946 in Bad Gandersheim ) is a German ancient historian .

Helmuth Schneider studied history and philosophy in Tübingen and Marburg from 1966 to 1973 . His doctorate took place in 1973 with the thesis Economics and Politics - Investigations into the History of the Late Roman Republic with Karl Christ .

From 1978 to 1988 Schneider was a research assistant and university assistant for ancient history at the Free University of Berlin . There he completed his habilitation in 1986. At the University of Kiel in 1988/89 he was a substitute for an ancient history professorship. From 1989 to 1991 he worked as a private lecturer in Heidelberg and from the winter semester of 1991 until his retirement he was founding professor for ancient history at the University of Kassel . Schneider has been editor of the New Pauly together with Hubert Cancik since 1995 . Since 1998 he has been a member of the Historical Commission for Hesse .

Schneider is a specialist in the ancient economic and social, in particular the history of technology.
