The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the cliffs in 2000. Its name is derived from a helicopter of the type HH-52A Seaguard of the United States Coast Guard , which crashed on January 9, 1971 not far from the cliffs. The four-man crew remained uninjured, the wreck remained at the scene of the accident.
