The shirt robe is a simply cut piece of clothing that is pulled over the head. It exists
- from a continuous length of fabric with a head hole and two side seams or
- made of two lengths of fabric with shoulder and side seams or
- from a length of fabric with a shoulder and a side seam on one side.
The seams are straight, which means that the entire length of fabric is used except for a possible cutout on the head, so the shirt garment is optimal with regard to any waste . In principle, it is sleeveless , but it also comes with attached sleeves. In its simplest form, the shirt gown is open at the side and is held together by a belt, and the neckline is created by a slit running parallel to the fabric.
The shirt robe is already documented in various forms in ancient cultures . These include:
- the Kalasiris in ancient Egypt ,
- the kethoneth of the Babylonians , Assyrians and Hebrews ,
- the Median garment adopted by the Persians ,
- the sleeve chiton among the Asians and Etruscans ,
- the chiton among the Greeks ,
- the tunic of the Romans ,
- the Dalmatika with the Copts ,
- the shirt garment held together with shoulder brooches, which was common among the Iron Age Celts and Teutons ,
- the medieval cotte .
The shirt robe is not only common in the ancient Orient and ancient Europe , numerous forms are also documented in the ancient cultures of Asia and pre-Columbian America.
