Henderson Island is an icy, 15 km long and up to 240  m high island off the coast of the East Antarctic Queen Marie Land . It is located 14 km southeast of Masson Island in the middle of the Shackleton Ice Shelf .

Participants of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson discovered them in February 1912. Mawson named them after the Australian historian George Cockburn Henderson (1870-1944) from the University of Adelaide , a member of the advisory committee of the research trip .
