Hendrick Goudt (* around 1583 in The Hague ; † December 17, 1648 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch painter and engraver of the Golden Age .

Life

Goudt was born around 1583 to Arend Goudt and Anneken Cool. Goudt's grandfather Hendrik came from a family of high officials. He was the nephew and heir of Willem Goudt , the governor of Holland. Goudt's mother was the mother of an innkeeper in Dortrecht . Arend Goudt married Anneken on January 10, 1604 to legitimize their son. The couple never lived together. In 1596 Goudt's father was ennobled by Heinrich IV and Hendrick Goudt himself became a Ridder, Heere van Noortnieuwlant, van de Keen ende ambachtsheer van de vijff Gorssen . On December 12, 1612, Arend Goudt bought a large property with the Janskerkhof in Utrecht.

Hendrick went to Rome as a young man and worked there with Adam Elsheimer until his death in 1610. In 1611 Goudt came to Utrecht, where he became a member of the Guild of St. Luke . During this time, a series of five prints of Elsheimer's works was created. Goudt also copied several works by his teacher. This work established Elsheimer's fame in the Netherlands and Western Europe.

In 1624 a young woman who wanted to marry Hendrick is said to have administered an aphrodisiac to the painter , which led to severe brain damage. His father declared in 1625 that Hendrick had been seriously ill for four years. Thereupon Arend Goudt was appointed as his son's guardian.
