Hendrik Otto van Thol (born December 28, 1859 in The Hague , Netherlands ; † July 11, 1902 there ) was a Dutch painter and draftsman.

Live and work

Van Thol was a son of Hendrik Adrianus van Thol (1834-1920), who ran a liquor store, and Catharina Hendrika van Soldt (1834-1921).

Van Thol was trained at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague. He painted still lifes, city ​​landscapes , animal scenes and was best known for his winter landscapes . Van Thol and the painter Aletta Ruijsch (1860–1930) received a sponsorship award from the Queen in 1892. He supported Louis Apol in his panorama of Novaya Zemlya , which was shown in Amsterdam between 1896 and 1901 . Van Thol married Ruijsch in 1899. He stayed regularly in the Veluwe during the summer and moved to Nunspeet with his wife . Every Thursday he went to The Hague to teach. Well-known students were Pieter ten Cate, Henriëtte Dingemans-Numans and Willem Justus Ising.

Van Thol died in The Hague as a result of a bicycle accident and was buried in the Oud Eik en Duinen cemetery. He was a member of the Pulchri Studio . At the end of 1902, the association held an exhibition with works by him and the painter Taco Mesdag, who also died that year .
