Hennes Schmitz

Hennes Schmitz (born January 20, 1907 , † January 7, 1993 ) was a German football player who was in the final round of the 1929 German championship with Meidericher SV .

Career in football

Probably in the summer of 1927, the midfielder moved up to the first team of Meidericher SV. Together with his colleagues, he fought for the title in the Niederrhein district class, which was often narrowly missed in previous years. In 1928 they only finished second, but at the end of the 1928/29 season they won the Lower Rhine Championship for the first time in the club's history. This entitled to participate in the West German championship , in which Meiderich finished second after a defeat in the decisive game against FC Schalke 04 . Thanks to this placement, the team was able to move into the German championship finals of 1929. On June 16 of this year in the Duisburg Wedaustadion the round of 16 was lost 3-2 to the reigning champions Hamburger SV with the help of Schmitz.

On the Lower Rhine it was then about defending the title, but Homberger SV was able to prevail in 1930. A year later, however, succeeded in winning the title again. Schmitz was actively involved in this success, but was not used when Meiderich played after successfully qualifying for the German championship in 1931 and was eliminated there against TSV 1860 Munich . It is not known whether and for what period of time he was part of the team beyond 1931. What is certain, however, is that he played for the MSV for years when he played in the old men’s team with his former teammates Eberhard Graffmann and Willi Lange . The former player died in 1993 at the age of 85.
