Eberhard Graffmann

Eberhard Graffmann († around 1980) was a German football player who was in the final round of the 1929 German Championship with Meidericher SV and was chairman of the same club from 1947 to 1949.

Career as a player

Graffmann's family came from the Duisburg district of Meiderich , where one of his ancestors was one of the founders of the local soccer club Meidericher SV in 1902. Around two decades later he began his own career with this club, but the exact time of his admission to the team is not known. In the line-up of the district championship eleven from 1922, he is not yet listed, but one year later he was part of the team that narrowly missed the championship in the Gauliga Niederrhein. In the fight for the title of Lower Rhine Champion, the MSV always played a role in the following years, but always failed and for this reason was considered the "eternal second".

Graffmann developed into an important personality within the team and took over the post of captain in 1926 at the latest, when he and his colleagues took first place in the table in the 1928/29 season. Accordingly, after several attempts, the title was won on the Lower Rhine for the first time. This entitled to participate in the West German championship , in which Meiderich took second place after a defeat in the decisive game against FC Schalke 04 . Nevertheless, the club from Duisburg was allowed to take part in the German championship finals of 1929 and met Hamburger SV in the round of 16 on June 16 . With a 2: 3 defeat in the Wedaustadion , his eleven were eliminated against the north German champions.

For a longer period of time, including during the sporting highs of 1929, he played alongside his brother Heinrich . Eberhard was also named Graffmann I and Heinrich Graffmann II for better distinction . Eberhard Graffmann was mainly called up as a left midfielder in the 2-3-5 system that was common at the time. He remained part of the team until at least 1930 and then ran on the side of several former teammates for the old men of the MSV.

Responsible at MSV

Shortly after the end of the Second World War , Graffmann was involved in the rebuilding of Meidericher SV and was chairman of the association from 1947 to 1949. During this time, the qualification for the 2nd League West , which represented the substructure for the regionally limited league system, the highest division Oberliga West . After he left the presidential office, he stayed with the club in an important role as a match committee chairman. In this role he also experienced the league promotion in 1951. When he refused the player Gerd Schönknecht the release for a change in the run-up to the season 1953/54, he lost the support of the team. As a result, the members did not re-elect him on July 21, 1953. However, he held his office again during the 1955/56 season. In July 1958, he resigned for health reasons.

For his services to the MSV, he was the first member ever to be awarded the club's ring of honor. Eberhard Graffmann, whose descendants are still committed to the association, died in the early 1980s.
