Gerd Schönknecht

Gerd Schönknecht (born April 5, 1926 , † January 25, 2009 ) was a German football player who completed 161 games in the Oberliga West in the service of Meidericher SV .

Career

Player at Meiderich (1952–1959)

The defender Schönknecht played in the late 1940s for the amateur club Duisburger SC 1900 , where he was one of the top performers. He was already 26 years old when he was included in the squad of the upper division Meidericher SV from Duisburg in 1952 . He made the leap into the starting eleven straight away and formed a defensive chain with the players Kurt Neumann and Wilhelm Schmidt , who had been part of the team for years , which remained unchanged for the following seasons.

He experienced a successful first season in 1952/53 , which ended in fourth place in the table for the MSV in the heavily occupied Oberliga West, which was the top division in the then still regionally limited league system. Nevertheless, in the summer of 1953 it almost came to his departure, because for private and professional reasons he was considering a move to southern Germany and a related move to the Stuttgarter Kickers . On the part of the club, however, the release was refused and so Schönknecht remained loyal to the Meiderichern. In 1955 he had to accept relegation to the II. Division , joined the team in the second division and in 1956 was able to record direct promotion. Subsequently, Schönknecht discovered his scoring qualities, scored eleven times in the course of the 1956/57 season and was together with Heinz Bohnes the top scorer of the MSV, who was able to assert himself sovereignly in the league as seventh in the table. Both he and Bohnes were under observation by the national coach Sepp Herberger and received express praise from him, but were not accepted into the national team. More good years followed for the team, which came fourth again in 1958, and Schönknecht kept his regular seat until he turned his back on Meidericher SV in 1959. The then 33-year-old had previously played 161 league games with 23 goals and 25 second division games without a goal.

Players and coaches in lower leagues (after 1959)

After leaving Meiderich, Schönknecht wore the jersey of the former top division club Rheydter Spielverein and was then part of the Borussia Mönchengladbach team. In the 1960s he coached various amateur clubs in the Mönchengladbach area . In retirement he lived in the Pulheim district of Stommeln until he died in 2009 at the age of 82.
