Henri François Xavier Gresley

Henri François Xavier Gresley (born February 9, 1819 in Wassy , Haute-Marne department , †  May 2, 1890 in Paris ) was a French général de brigade and minister of war .

Gresley joined the French General Staff as a sous-lieutenant in 1840 and accompanied General Herbillon to Algeria in 1847 . Until July 1870 it was used in the Bureaux arabes .

When the Franco-Prussian War broke out in 1870, Gresley was promoted to Général de brigade and appointed Chief of Staff of the 1st Army Corps . He took part in the Battle of Sedan and then remained in German captivity until the peace agreement . He then became deputy chief of staff in the War Ministry , where he worked on the drafting of the reorganization of the French army. In 1874 he was appointed Chief of the General Staff in the War Ministry. He resigned in 1877, but took it up again in 1879.

Gresley was named a Senate Life Member , where he joined the Left Center. On May 16, 1878 , he was appointed Minister of War . During his tenure, Gresley worked hard to ensure that France's eastern border was defensible again. On December 28, 1879 , he resigned from the cabinet along with the other ministers of the Left Center and was appointed commander of the 5th Army Corps in March 1880. In 1883 he took his leave.

Henri Francois Xavier Gresley died in Paris on May 2, 1890.
