Henri Georges Boulay de la Meurthe (born July 15, 1797 in Nancy , † November 24, 1858 in Paris ) was a French statesman and from 1849 to 1852 Vice President of the Second Republic .

Life

Henri Georges Boulay de la Meurthe was the elder son of the French politician Antoine Jacques Claude Joseph, comte Boulay de la Meurthe . He studied law. Although he actively participated in the struggle during the July Revolution of 1830 , he showed himself to be an opponent of the new government of Louis-Philippe I. From 1837 to 1839 he represented the Department of Meurthe in the Chamber of Deputies, where he always voted with the left , from 1842 to the February revolution of 1848 that of the Vosges . For a long time he was also the municipal councilor of Paris, a member of the general council in the Seine département and commander of the 11th legion of the Paris National Guard.

Boulay de la Meurthe dealt in particular with questions of social economy and public education and in this sense worked with success in the Chamber of Deputies and in the municipal council. The establishment of the refuge houses ( salles d'asyle ), the expansion of elementary education, and some improvements in the situation of the workers were encouraged or supported by him. Through the election in the Vosges department, he entered the National Assembly in 1848 , where he stood by the moderate republicans. Placed by the President of the Republic at the head of the three candidates for the Vice-Presidency, he was elected to this office by the National Assembly on January 20, 1849. At the same time he became President of the State Council.

After the coup of Napoleon III. of December 2, 1851, the Boulay de la Meurte submitted without resistance, he was on January 14, 1852 by a decree of Napoleon III. deposed as Vice President. He took part in the so-called Consultative Commission, from which he entered the new Senate on January 26, 1852 . He died in Paris on November 24, 1858 at the age of 61. His younger brother François Joseph Boulay de la Meurthe (* 1799, † 1880) was also active in French politics.
