Henri Huvelin

Henri Marie-Joseph-Philippe Huvelin (born October 7, 1830 in Laon , Département Aisne , † July 10, 1910 in Paris ) was a French priest .

Henri Huvelin wanted to become a priest at an early age, but because of his father's resistance to this choice of profession, he first took up extensive studies, which greatly helped his later effectiveness. After studying philosophy , Greek and literary studies, he was ordained a priest at the age of 37 in 1867 and worked as vicar at the churches of Saint-Eugène and from 1875 at Saint-Augustin. He gave "conferences" (spiritual lectures) for young people and, up to 1886, courses on church history, moral teaching and Christian spirituality, which attracted many people. In his later years, an agonizing illness only allowed him to do individual pastoral care - sometimes by letter. After his death he was buried on July 13, 1910 in the Paris cemetery ( Cimetière de Montmartre ).

Abbé Huvelin became known as the “spiritual father” of Charles de Foucauld , whom he took back into the church (long-term correspondence) and Émile Littré , who, under his influence, again approached the Catholic Church. The lay theologian Baron Friedrich von Hügel was one of his numerous correspondence partners .
