He developed his language theory from practice, from his poetry and translations. His translation of several books of the Old Testament and his research on Victor Hugo made him famous. The literary scholar Hans Lösener writes about the reception in Germany:

Meschonnic's work is still hardly received in Germany. As far as I know, Jürgen Trabant (1990) was the first to draw attention to him in Germany . In 1999 Achim Geisenhanslüke published an essay on the poetics of Meschonnic in the magazine Kodikas / Code. In the same year my study on rhythm in language was published, which is based on Meschonnic's work. The Canadian literary scholar Lucie Bourassa wrote a knowledgeable and compact introduction to his work in 1997. Translations of Meschonnic's books into German are still pending.
