Henricus Stephanus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henricus Stephanus , actually Henry Estienne , (* around 1460, † 1520 ) was a French printer in Paris.

He must have married the widow of the printer Johann Higman. His partner was Wolfgang Hopyl (also Hopilius , Hopil ). He was friends with the humanist Faber Stapulensis .

In May 7, 1502, he and Hopil printed his first book on the ethics of Aristotle . The name of the printer and publisher Stephanus appears for the first time in this volume, making it the first product of what is perhaps the most important printer dynasty of the 16th century. From 1504 he worked alone again. By his death he had published over 120 works, mostly in Latin and in the folium format .

His son Robert Estienne also became a printer, his grandson Henri Estienne under the same name.
