Henrietta Carstairs

Henrietta Carstairs (* 1777 or 1778 ; † after 1817 ) was a British mountaineer and nanny .

Life

Henrietta Carstairs gained fame in 1817 with the first ascent of the Sugar Loaf in Rio de Janeiro . The 395-meter-high rock was previously considered to be impassable. The British woman placed the Union Jack , the national flag of the United Kingdom , on the summit . Legend has it that a patriotic Portuguese soldier climbed the rock the following day to exchange the foreign flag for his own.
