Life

Henriette with Ludwig

Henriette was an actress at the Grand Ducal Hessian Court Theater in Darmstadt and in Augsburg . She fell in love with Duke Ludwig in Bavaria , the eldest brother of Empress Elisabeth . The relationship between the two was difficult, as Ludwig was expected to marry in keeping with his status. When her illegitimate daughter Marie Louise , who later became Countess Larisch-Moennich, was born on February 24, 1858 , there was an rapprochement with the ducal family. Karl Emanuel, the second child, was born on May 9, 1859, but died on August 1, 1859 at just under three months. On May 19, 1859, Henriette was raised to the nobility and was immediately allowed to call herself Henriette Baroness von Wallersee . The hereditary title of nobility also applied to the descendants. The morganatic marriage between Henriette Freifrau von Wallersee and Duke Ludwig in Bavaria took place on May 28, 1859 in Augsburg . When Ludwig Henriette married, he had to renounce his birthright and thus a large fortune and his high position. Henriette was very popular in the family and was needed again and again. Henriette died of abdominal cancer in 1891 .
